Rape crisis hit out at Germaine Greer for saying ‘rape is just bad sex’

by , in

Rape Crisis has hit out at Germaine Greer for saying that rape is just ‘bad sex’ and that rapists should have ‘R’ tattooed on their cheek instead of being jailed.

The charity said the comments, made at Hay Literary Festival, ‘do nothing to improve justice or reduce sexual violence’.

Greer, who was raped at a party days before she turned 19, also said that most rape doesn’t ‘involve any injury whatsoever’.

Katie Russell, as a spokesperson for Rape Crisis England & Wales: ‘If penetrating another person’s body without their consent is not an act of violence, what is?

‘Rape is an inherently violent crime, regardless of whether visible external injuries are sustained.

‘Through our 40+ years’ frontline experience of listening to and supporting women and girls who’ve been raped, we know it often has long-lasting and wide-ranging impacts, including post-traumatic stress symptoms and Disorder.

‘Many of those we work with don’t identify as victims or ‘rapees’ but as survivors, of an horrific and unjust experience but one that they choose not to let define them.

‘But they have undoubtedly been victims of a very serious crime and we use each individual’s preferred language to talk about what they’ve been through.

Rape crisis hit out at Germaine Greer for saying 'rape is just bad sex’

‘Regardless of how those who’ve been raped identify, we listen to, believe, support and respect them.

‘The criminal justice system already routinely lets them down.

‘Reducing sentences or declassifying crimes would do nothing to improve justice or reduce sexual violence.’

During her appearance at the festival, Greer told an audience: ‘We are told it’s one of the most violent crimes in the world – bullshit.’

She went on: ‘Most rape is just lazy, just careless, just insensitive. ‘Every time a man rolls over on his exhausted wife and insists on enjoying his conjugal right, he is raping her.

It will never end up in a court of law. ‘Instead of thinking of rape as a spectacularly violent crime – and some rapes are – think about it as non-consensual, that is, bad sex.

‘Sex where there is no communication, no tenderness, no mention of love.’

In March this year, Greer was accused of victim-blaming after calling alleged victims of Harvey Weinstein ‘career rapees’.

She also said the #MeToo movement had not been effective: ‘I don’t actually think it’s gone too far, I don’t think its got anywhere at all.

What we need is to sort out the law regarding rape and to sort out our concept of what it is. ‘It’s pointless now bringing up this stuff when most of it no action can be taken. Why wait 20 years?’

Germaine Greer's controversial statements Other statements made during her Today programme appearance:
Allegations ‘wreck lives’: ‘The amount of legal muscle that will be used to defend these people is massive and I’m concerned for damage limitation rather than maximasation.

‘Rather than wrecking people’s lives, so they become career rapees.’

Non-disclosure agreements: ‘Some [alleged victims] have been paid six figure sums in the form of non-disclosure agreements.

‘That’s a dishonorable thing to accept and it’s not something you should boast about.’

#MeToo doesn’t work: ‘I don’t actually think it’s gone too far, I don’t think its got anywhere at all.

‘What we need is to sort out the law regarding rape and to sort out our concept of what it is.’

Historic allegations ‘pointless’: ‘It’s pointless now bringing up this stuff when most of it no action can be taken.

‘Why wait 20 years?’

What she would have done: ‘I wouldn’t have been sitting around being quiet and keeping a secret.’

Kim Kardashian met Donald Trump at the White House to discuss prison reform

by , in

Kim Kardashian West met Donald Trump at the White House to discuss prison reform. The reality TV star, 37, met the president on Wednesday and it was reported she was there to ask for Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old grandmother who is serving a life sentence for a first-time non-violent drug offence, to be pardoned.

Following the meeting, Mr Trump tweeted a picture of the pair inside the Oval Office. He captioned the image: ‘Great meeting with @KimKardashian today, talked about prison reform and sentencing.’

It is unknown exactly what was discussed during the meeting but afterwards Kardashian West tweeted her thanks to the president and said she hoped Johnson would be freed.

She wrote: ‘I would like to thank President Trump for his time this afternoon. It is our hope that the President will grant clemency to Ms. Alice Marie Johnson who is serving a life sentence for a first-time, non-violent drug offense.’

She added: ‘We are optimistic about Ms. Johnson’s future and hopeful that she -and so many like her-will get a second chance at life.’

Vanity Fair magazine first reported that Kardashian West was due to speak to Mr Trump and his son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner.

Kardashian West is thought to have been involved in private discussions with Mr Kushner and his wife Ivanka Trump for several months.

Johnson is currently serving a life sentence in prison without parole after being convicted of drug-related charges in 1997.

An online petition to grant clemency to Johnson, started by her daughter, currently has more than 250,000 signatures.

Kardashian West’s husband, the rapper Kanye West, has drawn criticism for his support of the president, and was pictured wearing a cap bearing the slogan, ‘Make America Great Again’, a phrase associated with Mr Trump.

Earlier this month, Mr Trump pardoned the heavyweight boxer Jack Johnson, who was convicted in 1913 of violating the Mann Act for transporting a woman across state lines for ‘immoral purposes’.

Offset Buys New Ride for Man Who Saved Him From Car Crash

by , in

Offset just paid back the good Samaritan who he says saved his life following his accident with a new car, so the guy won't ever have to walk to and from work again.
TMZ broke the story ... the Migos rapper totaled his green Dodge Challenger in Atlanta earlier this month. He said he was swerving to avoid hitting a "crackhead" in the road.
The good Samaritan, Jamar, had been walking to work when he saw Offset climbing out of the wrecked car... at least that's how Offset described it. Offset says now Jamar will be driving around a new whip, instead.
The wreck was so bad Offset had to go to the hospital where his hand was bandaged. It's unclear exactly what Jamar did, but Offset says he got him to his destination safely.
As for Jamar's new whip ... it appears to be a Nissan Altima.

Britain’s Got Talent blunder as crew member gets caught up on stage

by , in

A member of the Britain’s Got Talent crew ended up becoming an accidental star during the third live semi-final.

As Acrocadabra took to the stage to start the show, viewers spotted an unusual part of their act. Their dazzling routine was rounded off with a cloth being pulled off a box making one of the performers vanish.

But something that wasn’t quite like the others was revealed instead. A crewmember dressed in black was stood behind the box and his shocked expression said that he’d ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

He tried to crouch down out of the way, but it was too late. His face had gone out to the nation on live TV. Spotting the error on Twitter, viewers joked about the ‘surprise guest’.

One tweeted: ‘Can we please vote for the crew guy who just got caught on stage behind the glass box!?’

The acts who were actually meant to be there on the night included dance troupe RISE Unbroken, magician Marc Spelmann and musician Aleksandar Mileusnic.

Teacher jailed for having sex with boy, 14, in her classroom on last day of school

by , in

A teacher made a tearful apology as she was jailed for having sex with a 14 year-old school boy in her classroom on the last day before summer vacation.

Jessica Langford, 32, sobbed as she apologized for molesting the student in the locked room last May, with the Dayton Daily News sharing a video of her telling a court: ‘I would like to tell you how deeply sorry i am to you your family and everyone else impacted by my actions ‘I wish i could go back and undo all that happened.

‘I am completely responsible for my actions and should never have abused my power as a teacher and developed a friendship with a student. ‘I take responsibility for my actions that were unbecoming of a teacher.

I want to apologize for using social media inappropriately. ‘We should never have exchanged any form of communication, by doing so I highly overstepped my role as a teacher.’

Langford, who was sentenced to a year in prison Tuesday, added that she’d struggled to maintain boundaries with her class, and that she felt ‘trapped in a teacher’s life.’

But her words cut no ice with the boy’s dad, who condemned Langford for denying the crime and forcing him to endure the stress of testifying before a criminal trial.

He added that the youngster felt ’embarrassed and alone’ and that he has been targeted by bullies as a result of last year’s molestation.

Langford will spend just a year behind bars for three counts of sexual battery and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, despite the maximum sentence for the crimes being 15 years.

The former Miamisburg School District teacher was let off with the lighter sentence because she has no previous criminal convictions, and because she is sole carer for her sick mother and young daughter.

She will serve her time at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville.

Man caught spitting into boss’s drink when he thought no one was looking (watch video)

by , in

Don’t be like this guy – even if your boss really, really winds you up. He was filmed spitting into a glass of water, before casually getting up and taking it over to his boss.

In the grim video, filmed in Uttar Pradesh in India, the office assistant can be seen glancing from side to side to check that he’s not being watched.

He then lowers his head to spit into a glass, before sealing the container and leaving.

But he didn’t realise that a hidden camera had been set up to record his actions after colleagues noticed a sudden change in his behaviour.

Pics shows: The man spits into his boss' glass of water; This is the disgusting moment an office worker spits into his boss??? cup of water seconds before taking it to her for refreshment. The incident took place in a legal office in Aligarh, a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. In footage, the man employed as an office assistant walks into a room and pours clean water from a yellow container into a legal official???s metal cup. Meanwhile, a craftily-placed camera films the man. The officer worker then has a quick look around to check he is alone before he lowers his head to spit into the cup. He then slowly seals the container and cup and leaves. The video was uploaded to social media where it has been widely-circulated. The man meanwhile has since been suspended after a departmental inquiry. The investigation began four days previously when the legal officer noticed a change in the man???s behaviour. After becoming worse, the female official decided to set up a hidden camera and record his actions. When she realised that the orderly had served her water and had spat in it, she initiated proceedings against him. District Judge Prem Kumar Singh has confirmed the suspension of the man. A similar case occurred recently in the town of Hamirpur in the northern Indian Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh. A man was dismissed after he was found guilty of serving urine to his employer.Pics shows: The man spits into his boss' glass of water; This is the disgusting moment an office worker spits into his boss??? cup of water seconds before taking it to her for refreshment. Melania Trump issues rare statement to decline rumors about her ‘disappearance’

by , in

Melania Trump rubbished speculation about her disappearance from public view as wild rumours over her whereabouts swept the internet.

The First Lady tweeted Wednesday: ‘I see the media is working overtime speculating where I am & what I’m doing.

‘Rest assured, I’m here at the @WhiteHouse  my family, feeling great, & working hard on behalf of children & the American people!

She spoke out after wild – and totally unsubstantiated – internet rumors claimed that she had dumped Donald Trump and moved back to New York, reports Politico

Others claimed, without foundation, that Mrs Trump is recovering from secret cosmetic surgery, or cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian interference.

Most unlikely of all was the claim that she has shacked up with former president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle to write a tell-all book about her life in the White House.

Before today’s tweet, the most recent White House update on the FLOTUS came on May 14, when it was revealed she had an embolization procedure to treat a ‘benign kidney condition.’

She was last seen in person four days earlier as she and her husband welcomed home three Korean-American men who had been held by North Korea.

They did not explain why Mrs Trump subsequently spent five days at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for an operation that usually only requires an overnight stay.

No explanation has since been forthcoming on why the president’s wife has not appeared at any big events alongside her husband, including Monday’s Memorial Day commemoration at Arlington Cemetery.

Those close to Mrs Trump told Politico that she is behind the decision to reveal so little information about her absence from the spotlight.

They say she feels people are being nosey, rather than genuinely concerned about her, and that she has no desire to reveal any information as a result.

A White House official conceded that the Trump administration is itself to blame for such speculation, saying: ‘It’s expected that Trump people are hiding something.’

However, that unnamed source added that Mrs Trump has spent longer out of the public eye before, including during the transition period she spent in New York with her son Barron before finally moving to the White House last summer.

First Lady expert Katherine Jellison, a history professor at Ohio University said: ‘It’s unusual over the course of the past 50 years for a first lady not to be in public view, and, when she is out of the spotlight for a prolonged period, not to tell people what’s going on.

‘There’s no guidebook to being first lady. It’s not an elected office, and she’s not under any obligation to tell us.

‘It’s just become the modern norm and expectation that we know.

‘The danger in a situation like this if you don’t have some control over the narrative, then people’s imaginations go wild.’

Melania was hailed for her flawless hosting of a state dinner to welcome French President Emmanuel Macron to the White House last month, and rolling out her Be Best anti-bullying initiative.

No further information has been released on when she will next appear in public, although Mrs Trump is expected to appear at a Congress summer party at the end of June, and Fourth of July picnic.

Spokesman Stephanie Grisham dismissed the rumors about her whereabouts, saying: ‘Sadly, we deal with conspiracy theories all the time, so this is nothing new, just more silly nonsense.

‘She is doing great. I wouldn’t characterize it as a long absence. She was hospitalized for almost a week and is now home and recovering.’

Actress and singer falls from luxury flat in Heron Tower in suspected murder

by , in

An aspiring actress and singer who died falling from a skyscraper balcony could have been murdered, police believe.

Bethany-Maria Beales, 22, plunged from the 19th floor of The Heron, a 36-floor residential skyscraper in the heart of the City. Her body was found with ‘significant injuries consistent with a fall from a height’ on a communal terrace on the sixth floor of the building on Moor Lane on Saturday.

City of London police have arrested a man and a woman, both aged 38, on suspicion of murder. They have since been bailed.

Miss Beales’ family have paid tribute to their ‘shining star’ who studied drama at the University of Roehampton.

In a statement they said: ‘Beth was a kind, funny, loyal, intelligent, talented and stunningly beautiful person who changed the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her and lucky enough to be loved by her.

‘She was more than a daughter, grand-daughter, niece, cousin, stepsister, step-auntie, god-daughter or friend. She was the world to us all. ‘She had the brightest smile and the most beautiful singing voice. She was our songbird.

‘She had an amazing talent that, if it had been seen by the world, would have become known to millions.

‘To say we will miss her does not come close to describing how we feel. Our world will never be as bright again now that our shining star has gone.’

‘Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or may have information which can assist our investigation is asked to contact police as soon as possible.

Mother blasts airline after worker demanded proof that her mixed-race baby son was her child

by , in

An upset mother blasted Southwest Airlines after one of its workers demanded proof that her mixed-race baby son was her child.

Basketball coach Lindsay Gottlieb says she was flying home from Denver to Oakland in California Monday when a Southwest agent questioned whether one year-old Jordan was hers.

She showed the agent Jordan’s passport, but says the woman was unsatisfied and demanded to see Jordan’s birth certificate, asking ‘How do I know you’re the mother?’ Gottlieb did not have her baby’s birth certificate to hand, and says the agent eventually relented and let her board the flight.

But she was so incensed by the interaction that she took to Twitter to blast Southwest for the ‘racist’ encounter.

Mother blasts airline after worker demanded proof mixed-race baby son was her child
(FILES) In this file photo taken on December 10, 2017 shows a Southwest Airline pilot as he checks his plane from the cockpit window at a gate at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington,DC. A cracked window forced a Southwest Airlines passenger jet bound from Chicago to Newark to divert on May 2, 2018, two weeks after a midair engine explosion shattered a window on another of the company's Boeing 737s. The airline told AFP that the crew diverted the plane to Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport for "maintenance review of one of the multiple layers of a window pane" and that the flight landed "uneventfully.""The aircraft has been taken out of service for maintenance review, and our local Cleveland employees are working diligently to accommodate the 76 customers on a new aircraft to Newark," it said in a statement. Gottlieb wrote: ‘I’m appalled that after approximately 50 times flying with my one-year-old son, ticket counter personnel told me I had to “prove” that he was my son, despite having his passport.

‘She said because we have different last names. My guess is because he has a diff. skin color.’ She later told KPIX: ‘It hurt my feelings. It made me feel less than. ‘I was rattled, I think. I was a little bit shocked.

‘It is my responsibility to say, “Hey, this happened, this isn’t OK.” ‘And maybe somewhere down the line, that helps my son, who is biracial.’ Southwest said they are investigating the incident.

A spokesman added: ‘We always strive for the best experience for anyone who entrusts us with their travel.’
