Tributes paid after Home and Away star Cornelia Frances dies, aged 77

by , in

Tributes have been paid to Cornelia Frances, the British-born actress best-known for her role in Australian soap Home and Away, who has died aged 77.

Frances, born in Liverpool, had been in the entertainment industry for more than half a century following training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
After moving to Australia she became a stalwart of the small screen, starring as Morag Bellingham on Home and Away as well as hosting the Australian version of The Weakest Link.
Ray Meagher, who played Frances' on screen brother Alf Stewart, said: "Cornie was an incredibly loved and valued member of our cast over many, many years.
"We had a moment of silence for her on set this morning and she'll be sadly missed by both cast and crew."
Channel Seven said: "Cornelia Frances was a unique person. Her on screen presence inspired a generation of actors.
"This gift was coupled with an ability to bring a sense of dignity and presence into each room she entered. Her energy and character will be missed."
Lincoln Younes, who was in Home and Away from 2011 to 2014, tweeted: "#CorneliaFrances. You were always ahead of the game. Will miss your witty banter on-set X."
Her career also saw her take on roles in dramas including Sons and Daughters, The Young Doctors and Prisoner.
I met Cornelia Frances when I was 11. I was pretty terrified but she could not have been sweeter and I have always remembered that. Sad day.
RIP Cornelia Frances. A stalwart of the Oz entertainment industry. We worked together on Sons and Daughters and toured England together once in a play. A great character who will be greatly missed.
RIP Cornelia Frances. @Paul_Karp just reminded me how we conned our primary school teacher into letting us re-enact The Weakest Link in class as a terrifying sort of news quiz.

Saddened to read of the passing of an Aussie TV legend. Remembered by most as fearsome Morag Bellingham in Home and Away with numerous tv shows under her belt. Proud, dignified and beautiful even in the depths of illness. May she rest in peace. 💕
How incredibly sad it is to hear of Cornelia Frances’ passing. She was a true staple in the Australian television industry.

Gutted to hear about the passing of Cornelia Frances. Morag was one of the most iconic characters on and it was always a real treat when she’d pop back to the bay for a visit. She will be missed - “Morag” was a household name here in Ireland
In an interview at the start of the year, Frances revealed she was battling cancer.
She told Sydney paper the Daily Telegraph she had been diagnosed during a checkup at the Royal North Shore Hospital, which was used as the Albert Memorial Hospital in the Young Doctors.
"I discovered I had bladder cancer. This then spread to my hip bone which fractured, and then I almost died from loss of blood due to an ulcer in my throat. Despite all this, I am still here, as the old song goes," she said.

Elton John to deliver lecture on HIV in memory of Diana

by , in

Elton John is to deliver a lecture on HIV in memory of his close friend, Diana, Princess of Wales.
The veteran musician, 71, will set out a vision for an Aids-free future as he calls on governments and the private sector to fulfil the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal to end the disease worldwide by 2030.
Politicians, health workers, journalists, celebrities and people living with HIV/Aids will be among the audience on June 8 as Elton also reflects on his close friendship with Diana and their shared commitment to fighting the disease.
The Tiny Dancer singer – who set up the Elton John Aids Foundation in 1992 – will follow in the footsteps of ex-UN chief Kofi Annan and former US president Bill Clinton who have delivered previous lectures in Diana’s memory.
The lecture was launched by the National Aids Trust (NAT) in 1999 as a tribute to Diana, who was the first member of the royal family to have contact with a person suffering from HIV/Aids.
In the late 1980s, when many still believed the disease could be contracted through casual contact, she sat on the sickbed of a man with Aids and held his hand.
Publicly and privately she supported the work of those helping patients, with late-night trips to east London’s Mildmay HIV hospice, and she served as patron of the NAT.
Her son Prince Harry, now known as the Duke of Sussex, announced in 2016 he would be dedicating part of his public work to raising awareness of the fight against HIV, and he was publicly tested for the virus – with a negative result.
Elton shared a platform with Harry during an international Aids conference in South Africa in 2016, when the pair joined a panel of young people living with HIV who discussed the issues they faced.
The singer said: “I am delighted to be able to deliver this lecture and to remember the enormous contribution Diana, Princess of Wales made to this cause.
“In the quarter century since the Elton John Aids Foundation was established, the global Aids fight has changed beyond recognition.
“Yet tolerance and courage has never been more important in that fight. We need to remember what is important if we are going to be successful.”
Deborah Gold, chief executive of the NAT, warned 2018 is a “critical time” in the battle to beat the disease.
“We have all the tools we need to beat HIV, yet we lack the level of investment or political priority necessary to use them fully,” she said.
“In our 30th year, it is particularly timely to focus on the challenges ahead in the fight against HIV, as well as paying tribute to the lasting impact of Princess Diana’s work.”

People’s reaction to Raheem Sterling’s tattoo ‘is racist’, says ex-gang member

by , in

England forward Raheem Sterling has defended a new tattoo of an M16 assault rifle on his leg after facing criticism for it ‘glamorising guns’.

The 23-year-old, who plays for Manchester City, posted a picture of himself training with his England team-mates at St George’s Park, with a tattoo of an assault rifle on his right calf clearly visible.

Lucy Cope, who founded Mothers Against Guns after her son Damian was shot dead outside a club in central London in July 2002, said the ink was ‘totally unacceptable’.

She called for him to be dropped from the England team until he has it removed, telling The Sun: ‘We demand he has the tattoo lasered off or covered up with a different tattoo.

‘He’s supposed to be a role model but chooses to glamorise guns.’

Her comments have sparked widespread debate about whether the top footballer is spreading the wrong message to his many young fans.

But Sephton Henry, a former gang member who now works to stop young people getting involved in gang culture with UK charity Gangsline, said he believes Sterling has been unfairly targeted because he is black.

He told Metro.co.uk: ‘I don’t believe that you can go in on someone about a tattoo.

‘Yes, he’s got a lot of young people looking up to him, but what about P. Diddy? What about rappers who talk about gang culture, what about all these other celebrities with offensive tattoos, what about Lady Gaga and Beyonce being sexual with an army of young fans?

‘He has explained it – it’s a metaphor. It’s on his right foot, his shooting foot. He is saying his foot shoots like a gun. The only reason people are kicking off is because it is a young black man.

‘It’s not even a gang affiliated tattoo – there are no numbers or writing alongside it – which you would likely see if it was affiliated to a certain gang.’

He added: ‘It wouldn’t have been picked up on in the same way if this was a white person, because of the stereotype of gangs and gang culture and the stereotype of who carries out gun crime.’

In a post on Instagram, the former Liverpool player, who is among five England strikers heading to Russia for the World Cup, said the tattoo had ‘a deeper meaning’.

‘When I was two my father died from being gunned down to death I made a promise to myself I would never touch a gun in my life time, I shoot with my right foot so it has a deeper meaning N still unfinished,’ he wrote.

He has received both support and criticism from celebrities online including Gary Lineker and Labour MP Tom Watson.

Raheem Sterling defends controversial gun tattoo and insists it has ‘deeper meaning’

by , in

Raheem Sterling has defended his new gun tattoo and says it has a ‘deeper meaning’ regarding his father, who was killed by a gun when he was just two years old.

The Manchester City winger linked up with the England squad on Monday as the Three Lions get ready for the World Cup and revealed his new inking of an M16 assault rifle during training.

The tattoo quickly came under fire from anti-gun campaigners, while it was described as ‘sick’ by The Sun on their front page.

But Sterling has reacted angrily to the criticism, especially that of The Sun, and took to Instagram to defend himself.

After posting an image of the front page, he then wrote: ‘When I was two my father died from being gunned down to death.

‘I made a promise to myself I would never touch a gun in my lifetime. I shoot with my right foot so it has a deeper meaning [and it’s] still unfinished.’

Lucy Cope, who founded Mothers Against Guns after her son was shot in 2012, called on Sterling to be removed from the England squad due to the tattoo.

She told The Sun: ‘This tattoo is disgusting. Raheem should hang his head in shame. It’s totally unacceptable.

‘We demand he has the tattoo lasered off or covered up with a different tattoo.

‘If he refuses he should be dropped from the England team. He’s supposed to be a role model but chooses to glamorise guns.’

BBC presenter and former England striker Gary Lineker jumped to the defence of Sterling – whose father was killed in Kingston, Jamaica – after seeing the story.

‘He’s a terrific footballer with a brilliant work ethic,’ the 57-year-old tweeted. ‘This persecution is disgusting.’

Kendrick Lamar ‘threatens to remove music from Spotify over hateful conduct policy’

by , in

Kendrick Lamar has reportedly threatened to pull all of his music from Spotify after disagreeing with their new hateful conduct policy.

The streaming service announced the ‘Hate Conduct & Hateful Conduct’ policy earlier this month, which attempted to bring its ‘editorial decisions’ in line with the company’s values.

‘When an artist or creator does something that is especially harmful or hateful (for example, violence against children and sexual violence), it may affect the ways we work with or support that artist or creator,’ the policy reads.

This led to the removal of R Kelly – accused of grooming an underage girl in a BBC documentary – and XXXTentacion’s songs from certain playlists; the Florida rapper has been accused of domestic abuse in the past.

However, Spotify now seems to be rolling back the changes after representatives of artists including Kendrick contacted Spotify’s chief executive officer Daniel Ek and head of artist relations Troy Carter to complain about the new policy..

It is thought there are major concerns over censorship and also the decision to only punish black artists and no white artists.

‘Whoa. Are they censoring the music? That’s dangerous,’ Punch, the president of Top Dawg Entertainment, posted on Twitter. Top Dawg releases the music of rappers Lamar and Schoolboy Q

Several acts also threatened to pull their music if the current situation persisted. In response to the frustration aired by artists, Spotify is in discussion about rolling back the changes.

It also appears that they’ve agreed to restore XXXTentacion’s tracks to platform playlists, Bloomberg reports.

In other Kendrick news, the rapper recently shut down a fan who repeatedly used the N-word at his show after being invited on stage mid-set.

‘Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait,’ Kendrick quickly interjected as the fan began.

‘Am I not cool enough for you? What’s up, bro,’ the fan responded, seemingly unaware of her misdeed.

‘You gotta bleep one single word, though,’ Kendrick replied.

The fan was then reportedly booed off stage, while Lamar launched into 2012 single Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe.

Snoop Dogg smashes world record for largest ever glass of gin and juice – with 180 bottles of Hendricks

by , in

Someone pass us a biodegradable straw – Snoop Dogg has just made our gin lover’s dreams come true.

The rapper has gone and done it – he’s created the world’s largest gin and juice on stage during his gig at the BottleRock Napa Valley festival in paying homage to his own 1994 track Gin And Juice. Quite frankly we are simultaneously applauding the man and wondering why the heck this wasn’t done before.

Hopefully someone had a go at strawpedo-ing that one.

Snoop Dogg smashes world record for largest ever glass of gin and juice

The drink stood five feet tall and three feet wide, and was made up of 180, that’s 1-8-0 bottles of Hendricks. My god we hope someone drank that bad boy otherwise that’s a lot of gin to waste for the sake of a record. The juice was donated by Whole Foods, so that was a pretty decent one as well.

It even had a suitably large cocktail umbrella and straw to complete the BFG-sized tipple.

A post shared by snoopdogg (@snoopdogg) on

Rapper Warren G helped him out with the concoction, as well as top chef Michael Voltaggio.

Snoop was honoured by Guinness World Records with a certificate, although he probably didn’t notice given that he had 550 litres (or around 145 gallons) of Paradise cocktail to celebrate.

The single is what originally put Snoop on the map so it was a fitting way to honour it.

Tommy Robinson jailed 13 months for contempt of court

by , in

English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson has been jailed for 13 months after being arrested outside Leeds Crown Court last week, court officials have confirmed.

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon, was sentenced to 10 months for contempt of court and a further three months for breaching the terms of a previous suspended sentence.

He was arrested on Friday for contempt of court after using social media to broadcast details of an ongoing trial which is subject to blanket reporting restrictions.

Reporting restrictions were also placed on details of Robinson’s sentence but were lifted following a legal challenge on Tuesday.

Following his arrest his supporters protested outside the gates of Downing Street, while others took to social media where they were supported by right wing sympathisers in the US.

Millions of British people are now banned from using Whatsapp

by , in

Millions of people have just been banned from using Whatsapp in the UK. Until now, users had to be at least 13 years old to use the app, but that all changed following the introduction of strict European data privacy laws.

Users will be asked to confirm they’re 16 when they agree with a new terms of service and privacy policy.

What’s less clear is whether there’ll be any further checks – or if WhatsApp will kick off users it believes to be under 16. Under the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which comes into force on May 25, users have rights about how their data is stored and used.

GDPR is the biggest overhaul of online privacy since the birth of the internet, giving Europeans the right to know what data is stored on them and the right to have it deleted.

WhatsApp, which had more than 1.5 billion users in January, said in a blog post, ‘Our goal is simply to explain how we use and protect the limited information we have about you.’

WhatsApp, founded in 2009, has come under pressure from some European governments in recent years because of its end-to-end encrypted messaging system and its plan to share more data with its parent, Facebook.

Enrique Iglesias happy to share family snaps with fans

by , in

Pop superstar Enrique Iglesias is becoming more open with his family life online because he appreciates the support he has received from fans throughout his career.
The Hero hitmaker is known for being fiercely protective of his romance with longtime love Anna Kournikova, but since becoming parents to twins in December (17), the couple has been giving fans more of an insight into its personal lives via social media.
Both Enrique and former tennis star Anna have posted rare pictures and video clips of themselves with their babies, Nicholas and Lucy, at home in Miami, Florida in recent weeks, and the singer admits it was a conscious decision to connect more with devotees online.
"I don't mind sharing part of my life with them," he told The Associated Press. "I always have, in a way, through my music."
Enrique has been forced to spend some time away from his loved ones to fulfill his global tour commitments, and although the separation has been tough for the new dad, he insists being onstage and performing for fans is the next best thing.
"I miss my family like crazy," the Spanish star sighed. "But I love doing what I do, which is being on stage and just being surrounded by my fans. Those are the two things I love most in my life."
The musician's remarks emerge days after Anna mocked her own dancing skills in a funny video she shared on Instagram, in which she danced to Enrique's new Pitbull collaboration, Move to Miami, while holding baby Lucy in a front-facing carrier.
"#girlfun #movetomiami," she wrote beside the post, before quipping, "Little one, please don't inherit my dance moves".
