Everton hero calls for a 'young, brave and ruthless' manager

by , in
Former Blues striker Kevin Campbell wants: 'A manager who will set the club up for years to come'

Goodison Park hero Kevin Campbell has turned up the heat on manager Sam Allardyce by declaring: “Everton need to get a manager who will set the club up for years to come.”
Speaking on Twitter, the former striker, who netted 51 goals in 164 appearances between 1999-2005, said that the Blues boss must be: “Young enough, brave enough and ruthless enough to progressively steer the club forward.”
Given that current manager Allardyce, 63, by far the oldest manager Everton have had in their entire history – some eight-and-a-half years the senior of his predecessor Ronald Koeman, 54, who himself was previously the Blues elder statesman in the dugout – Campbell's comments do not reflect well on the former England coach.

Allardyce, who told the ECHO last month, “My length of stay at Everton is purely based on two things – results and entertainment – and we’ve got to put both things together, we’ve got to be entertaining and we’ve got to win football matches” has come in for heavy criticism following the Blues 1-0 defeat to Watford on Saturday evening.
Broadcasters BT Sport repeatedly apologised to viewers for the poor quality of play served up at Vicarage Road, and speaking in his ECHO column earlier on Monday, Campbell's ex-Everton team-mate Michael Ball said: “I know Sam came into the club to do a job but do we want to see this kind of football next season? I know I don’t.
“Will he change his ways next season to take us to that next level? I’m very doubtful that Sam will do so.
“Unless there is a big mentality change upstairs and in the dugout then it’s not something I want to keep watching next season.”

Chelsea plans for a new Eden Hazard contract to scare off Real Madrid and Man City revealed

by , in

Eden Hazard is set to be offered a pay rise to take his basic wage up to £300,000 a week in order to keep the Belgian at Stamford Bridge.
The Chelsea star is one of the most wanted midfielders in Europe with Manchester City and Real Madrid both linked as suitors this summer, especially with Antonio Conte's side in a battle to secure Champions League football.
Last season's Premier League champions are currently in fifth place and the fear is that their stand out attacker will seek a move away if he cannot gain access to Europe's most elite club competition with the Blues.
His current deal runs until 2020 but the title holders are determined to convince Hazard to sign an extension to effectively take him off the market.

Eden Hazard trains with Chelsea ahead of the Barcelona match

The 27-year-old is apparently worth £200million, according to the Mail, who also report that the winger is be offered a contract to make him one of the most highly-paid players in world football, and behind only Alexis Sanchez in the Premier League before bonuses.
In January, the Chilean moved from Arsenal to Manchester United in a straight swap deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move in the other direction. The lack of any fee between the two clubs saw both players enjoy a windfall over their new pay packets to further drive up competition over wages.
Hazard has been the talisman for two title-winning Chelsea teams under both Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte in 2015 and 2017, respectively.

According to the CIES Football Observatory, he is ranked as the most effective dribbler in Europe's major leagues, and would be a huge upgrade on the options of any world in world football.
Real Madrid are weighing up their options as the Cristiano Ronaldo era approaches its end with a growing appetite at the very top of the club to oversee an overhaul of the squad to bring in a new generation of Galacticos.
Manchester City tried to sign Alexis Sanchez in the summer of 2017 and made a move for Riyad Mahrez in January and would be extremely interested in signing Hazard if he were available.
However, Chelsea want to keep the player and are keen to tie him down to an even longer deal.

Arsenal pick candidates to replace faltering Arsene Wenger

by , in

Arsene Wenger’s position as Arsenal manager will be reviewed at the end of the season but succession planning has already begun and Monaco manager Leonardo Jardim and former captain Mikel Arteta are among those being considered.
Wenger has ended all his previous 21 seasons as manager with either a top-four finish or a trophy, but the manner of Sunday’s 3-0 Carabao Cup final defeat against Manchester City, coupled with the lack of any Premier League title challenge, has caused concern among the club’s hierarchy.
With Arsenal sixth in the table, preserving that record is now likely to hinge on winning the Europa League, which would also offer a path into the Champions League.
A second successive season outside the Champions League, especially after a series of club-record signings, would put Wenger’s position under severe scrutiny and create pressure for him to leave midway through his two-year contract. Arsenal, though, will consider all aspects of the season and regard all options as open.
Although majority owner Stan Kroenke has always been unequivocal in his backing of Wenger, he has also facilitated chief executive Ivan Gazidis’s off-field “catalyst for change” in a series of appointments around Wenger and the club would feel much better equipped to move on without their 68-year-old manager.
Kroenke’s son, Josh, has been in London recently and is spending time at the club’s Highbury House administrative base to learn more about the club. His view is likely to be critical. Arsenal will not make decisions about Wenger at a point in the season where there is still much to play for, and how they finish the season will heavily shape the decision.
Wenger is adamant that Arsenal can rally to challenge for a top-four place, even if the gap now is 10 points and his team’s form has been the worst of any of the “big six” clubs. He has always said that he intends to see out his contract, although all sides will be determined to avoid a repeat of last season when uncertainty over his future appeared to damage performances.

In the frame | The candidates to replace Wenger

Thierry Henry Bringing back the Arsenal legend would excite the fans but be a huge gamble
Leonardo Jardim Took Monaco to their first championship in 17 years with thrilling football
Paulo
Fonseca Portuguese has impressed with Shakhtar Donetsk in Champions League
Joachim
Low Won the World Cup with Germany, but may fancy a change after 12 years
Carlo Ancelotti Highly experienced Italian has been out of work since Bayern Munich sacked him
Brendan Rodgers Former Liverpool manager’s stock has risen with his success at Celtic
Mikel Arteta Former Arsenal midfielder is learning his craft with Pep Guardiola
Alternative potential managers are being constantly assessed and the work of Jardim who, like Wenger, has led Monaco to the French league title, as well as a Champions League semi-final, with a vibrant young team, has impressed. His team knocked Arsenal out of the Champions League three years ago but he has a contract until 2020 and Monaco would be determined to keep him.
Arteta is working as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and, while he has no managerial experience and would represent a gamble, he is well regarded at Arsenal following five years there as a player, including two as club captain, between 2011 and 2016. He is well known to Raul Sanllehi, Arsenal’s new head of football relations, as well as to Gazidis.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger reacts
There is also a feeling that Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers’ methods and experience would be suited to Arsenal, although selling his appointment to supporters may be tricky at a time when the club want to unify the fan-base following the intense and often angry debate that has surrounded Wenger.
Club record-scorer Thierry Henry has said that he would interested in what he calls a potential “dream” job and has been gaining coaching experience as Roberto Martinez’s assistant with the Belgium national team. Henry would be hugely popular among fans but there are understood to be reservations from some senior figures.
Germany’s World Cup-winning manager Joachim Low, and Paulo Fonseca at Shakhtar Donetsk, are others being monitored.
Whether or not Wenger leaves this season, Arsenal’s preference would be to make a clean break before inviting him back in some role in the future. A manager who can work within their new structure is another priority and, while Carlo Ancelotti is available and would be interested, they are more likely to target someone younger.
Arsenal also face big transfer decisions this year with Jack Wilshere out of contract in the summer, Aaron Ramsey yet to extend a deal that expires in 2019 and Hector Bellerin having wanted to return to Barcelona last summer.
Leading former players were damning on Monday of Sunday’s performance. “You can lose finals – I lost finals – but it’s how you lose them,” said Henry.
Paul Merson has often criticised Wenger but aimed his anger at the players. “One team was playing in a cup final, the other team looked like they were playing a testimonial,” he said. “I know people say the manager is responsible, but the players have got to take part of the blame now, it’s not always Arsene Wenger’s fault.”

High school junior and his 16-year-old girlfriend are found shot to death in Ohio woods in what police say was either a murder-suicide or double suicide

by , in

Jackson Township police say a Canal Fulton police officer performing a welfare check on Lauren Kaufman and Mason Brown found them together around 8.30pm on Friday in a wooded area behind a development in Jackson Township.

Both teens were shot in the head and police recovered a handgun at the scene.

Kaufman was pronounced dead on the spot. Brown died at a hospital at 2am on Saturday.

The girl was a sophomore at Northwest High School in Canal Fulton, where the boy was enrolled as a junior. Northwest High School Principal Larry Tausch said the two were likely dating.

'They were nice students. I saw them walking with each other Friday afternoon prior to me leaving school,' school resource officer Dennis Muntean told Fox 8.

That morning, both Kaufam and Brown had been at a special assembly organized by Principal Tausch to discuss the recent string of student suicides in Stark County, Ohio, and to send the Northwest community a message of hope, reported Ohio.com.

'We’re going to be an example of how to fix this,' Tausch told the 650 students enrolled at Northwest. 'We’re going to get this right.'

According to Tausch, he had known Kaufman from the time she was in middle school and described her as a quiet girl with a big heart. He said Brown had lived in Florida but moved to Ohio this year. The boy was also said to be quiet.
Kaufman's obituary reads that she is survived by her parents and two brothers.

On Saturday, more than 100 students came to the school to meet with grief counselors and provide solace to one another during this difficult time.

'It was shock. I didn’t think it could happen at our schools. We have a very close-knit school; people get along very well,' Muntean said, adding that it was the first major tragedy that has befallen the school in at least five years.

Kaufman and Brown's deaths come just a few days after police say a 13-year-old boy shot himself at a Jackson Township middle school. He died last Wednesday.

Raul fears the rise of the English clubs in the Champions League.

by , in
Real Madrid legend Raul fears the rise of the English clubs in the Champions League.

After five years of under-achievement since Chelsea lifted the trophy in 2012, the Premier League teams are catching the eye again in this campaign.

Liverpool and Manchester City hold healthy leads after the first leg of their last-16 ties while Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham can be hopeful of reaching the last eight as they prepare for their second-leg games.

Liverpool are among the English teams on course for the Champions League quarter finals

'The English teams this year are looking very dangerous rivals,' said Raul, who won the Champions League three times in 16 years with Real Madrid. 'They are very strong and maybe one of them will reach the semi-final or the final.

'I hope we can play against one of them. When you want to win the Champions League you have to beat the best.'

Real Madrid are 3-1 up against Paris Saint-Germain at the halfway stage.

'I hope after PSG there will be a chance to play an English team,' added Raul, speaking at the Laureus World Sports Awards. 'PSG is a good team, not only the three players up front.

Raul hopes Real Madrid face one of the Premier League clubs in the next round

'We must wait for the second leg but I hope Real will be in the next round.'

Real Madrid have won the European Cup trophy 12 times and were champions in three of the last four years.

It is always the prize they value the most but were beaten into second place in the group stage by Tottenham, who drew in the Bernabeu Stadium and won at Wembley.

There has been growing pressure on Real manager Zinedine Zidane, despite his recent success as manager and his legendary status as a player.

'Zidane is amazing,' said Raul. 'He has won a lot of trophies. He has won the Champions League twice as a coach, he is the best coach for Real Madrid and we want him to continue in the future.

'I don't think this is the end of a cycle. It's true we are far from the top of the league but we are still in the Champions League and there is a lot of talent at the club.'

Zinedine Zidane is still the man to lead Real Madrid into the future, insists Raul

Raul's confidence has been boosted by the return to form of Cristiano Ronaldo who has scored 12 in his last seven games.

Ronaldo is 33 and his powers may be fading but his mere presence offers hope to Real Madrid and the Portuguese star is on the six-man Laureus shortlist for Sportsman of the Year.

The awards will be handed out at a ceremony in Monaco on Tuesday.

'Cristiano is one of the best players in the history of football and one of the best in the history of Real Madrid,' said Raul. 'He deserves to win this award.

Cristiano Ronaldo's return to form has coincided with a much improved Los Blancos side

'This season, he started no so good but now he has more than 30 goals for the season and two in an important game against PSG. He scores in every game, in every year.'

At the World Cup, Ronaldo's Portugal will be up against Raul's Spain in Group B.

Both nations are expected to progress into the knock-out phase but although Raul has been impressed by the English teams in the Champions League he does not expect England to spring any surprises in Russia.

'I have four favourites: Spain, Brazil, Germany and Argentina,' said the 40-year-old former Spain international striker. 'After this four, I think Belgium, France and Portugal also have a chance to win the World Cup.'

Dolce & Gabbana is using drones to model its handbags at Milan Fashion Week

by , in

Dolce & Gabbana used quadcopter drones to model handbags on the runway.
You can see some footage of the hi-tech fashion show below.

Dolce & Gabbana's latest handbag models are ... drones.

At least eight quadcopter drones paraded down the Italian fashion house's runway carrying a handbag each at its Milan Fashion Week show on Sunday.

The drones glided down the runway, and stopped to be admired and photographed by the crowd, before returning backstage to make way for more traditional human models.

Each drone had what looks like a large, fake gemstone on top to fit the occasion.

Video footage of the parade shows a man and woman in white lab coats walking alongside the stage, monitoring the show.

Putting on the hi-tech fashion show appeared fairly difficult, however. The show was delayed for 45 minutes due to repeated announcements that all WiFi connections had to be turned off, according to the Associated Press.

Dolce & Gabbana is not the first company to use drones in a fashion show. In 2015, clothing company Betabrand used drones to model its clothing in Silicon Valley.

GQ slammed the idea of using drones as models at the time, writing: "Seriously, tech bros. Stay in your lane, we'll stay in ours."

Manchester United star Nemanja Matic 'wants Chelsea to beat Tottenham' to Champions League football

by , in
Manchester United star Nemanja Matic has suggested that he wants Chelsea to beat Tottenham to fourth this season.

The 29-year-old won the Premier League title with the Blues in 2015 and 2017 but asked to leave after becoming unsettled at the club.
Matic became aware that Tiemoue Bakayoko was being lined up as his long-term replacement and subsequently sealed a £40m move to Manchester United.
The Serbia international impressed in Sunday's 2-1 win over his former club and revealed afterwards his performance was inspired by an extra dose of motivation.
The defeat left Chelsea two points outside the top four in the race for the top four, but Matic took no joy in denting their Champions League hopes.
When pressed on whether he hopes his old club overtake Spurs, he added: "I wish Chelsea all the best. I can only say that."
