President Uhuru receives the FIFA World Cup Trophy


President Uhuru Kenyatta today received the World Cup trophy in a colorful ceremony held at State house, Nairobi in readiness for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

This was after the prestigious trophy arrived at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport; as was the case in 2010 and 2014.

In his speech Uhuru was clear that the Government remains committed to support local talent saying the Country’s should not give up hope of playing in the World Cup.

The President was grateful to FIFA was for the opportunity and called for more partnerships to nurture talent in all Counties.


Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Achesa called on County Governments to partner with the National Government to improve sports in the Country.

Earlier it was song, dance, joy and honor at Kenyatta International Airport as the FIFA delegation arrived to a warm reception in the country for the FIFA World cup trophy tour.

The world prestigious soccer trophy is made of 18 karat pure Gold with malachite base, and stands 36.8 centimeters high and weighs 6.1 kilograms.



The trophy was introduced in 1974 and was made by Stabilimento Artistico Bertoni Company, in Italy.

This is the third time the trophy arrives in the country where it will stay for two days giving Kenyans an opportunity to view it at Kenyatta International Convention Centre, KICC.

The trophy will then move to Mozambique on Wednesday and eventually to Uganda, Nigeria and Egypt. The previous World cup was held in 2014 in Brazil and was won by Germany who beat Argentina 1-0 in final after extra time.

The 2018 FIFA world cup will be in its 21st edition, a quadrennial international soccer extravaganza contested by men’s national teams of the member association, FIFA.

Finals are scheduled to take place in Russia from 14 June through to 15 July, after the country was awarded hosting rights in 2010.

In this year’s finals in Russia, Africa will be represented by five nations: Nigeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and Senegal.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup finals will be held in Qatar.
