The Queen’s formal document of consent that allows Prince Harry to marry Meghan Markle has been revealed.
Queen Elizabeth II signed the Instrument of Consent in March, but the official document, transcribed in calligraphy, has not been made public until now.
The document sealed by the Great Seal of the Realm states: ‘Now know ye that we have consented and do by these presents signify our consent to the contracting of matrimony between our most dearly beloved grandson Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Wales KCVO and Rachel Meghan Markle.’
When the Queen approved Prince William and Kate’s wedding in 2011 she called the Duchess of Cambridge ‘Our Trusty and Well-beloved Catherine Elizabeth Middleton.’
Royal expert Emily Nash explained on Twitter that the term is ‘only used for citizens of Britain or the Queen’s overseas Realms.’
For anyone wondering why Meghan is not described as "most trusty and well-beloved" like Kate was, it's because that term is only used for citizens of Britain or the Queen's overseas Realms. Meghan is not yet a British citizen. #RoyalWedding2018 #HarryandMeghan— Emily Nash (@emynash) May 12, 2018
The 36-year-old former actress from America is not yet a British citizen. Harry and Meghan’s official approval, includes imagery referencing the UK, California, the US and Princess Diana’s family.
The royal family explained that the design on the left of the handwritten document featured a red dragon and the symbol of Wales together with the UK’s floral emblems, the rose, thistle and shamrock.
For the other side, they wrote on family’s official Twitter account: ‘To the right of the text is another rose, the national flower of the USA, and golden poppies – the state flower of California, where Ms Markle was born.
‘Below the Welsh leek & Prince Harry’s Label are olive branches, adopted from the Great Seal of the United States.’
The Succession of the Crown Act 2013 requires the first six people in line of the throne to obtain the Queen’s permission.
Harry is sixth in line, following the birth of Prince Louis, who took his spot as number five. Meghan and Harry are set to get marry at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle in Berkshire on Saturday, May 19, at 12pm.
