Star Wars: The Last Jedi surpasses $1 billion at global box office after just three weeks

The Last Jedi has become the third most successful film of 2017, having surpassed the $1 billion mark just three weeks after it opened.
The latest film in the Star Wars franchise looks set to become another box office smash for Disney Studios as it became the most-watched film globally over the festive period.
According to box office figures, the sci-fi action epic made $1.040b as of New Year’s Eve, with half of takings coming from the US alone.

Despite having been open in cinemas for less than a month, the Rian Johnson-directed film has already surpassed 2017 hits including Wonder Woman and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
The only films to gross more last year were Beauty and the Beast, which closed out on $1.26b and The Fate of the Furious, which made $1.24b.
Over in the US, the new Star Wars film managed to beat even the global top two to finish 2017 as the highest-grossing film of the year.
Despite its box office success and critical acclaim, the film has divided fans and viewers, with many calling for it to be removed from the Star Wars cannon completely.
Even Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill said he was a little confused by his character’s arc when he first read the script.
“This is the next generation of Star Wars, so I almost had to think of Luke as another character. Maybe he is Jake Skywalker,” he said.
“He’s not my Luke Skywalker, but I had to do what Rian wanted me to do because it serves the story well.”
