Chelsea manager Antonio Conte fears a top four finish is slipping away as he says Manchester United defeat reveals a lack of 'experience and maturity'

by , in

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte said his side’s defeat by Manchester United revealed a lack of ‘experience and maturity’ which puts a top-four finish in doubt.

If Chelsea lose at Manchester City next Sunday, they could fall nine points adrift of the Champions League places.

‘When you have this type of situation you have to manage the game better and you must be able with experience, with maturity to get three points,’ Conte said. ‘Instead we are talking about a loss again and we must be very disappointed.’

Chelsea were beaten 2-1 by a Romelu Lukaku-inspired United in the Premier League on Sunday

United manager Jose Mourinho said Arsenal would also be out of the running for a top-four place if they lose to Manchester City when they meet in the Premier League on Thursday night.

‘Arsenal really need to win against City, otherwise the distance will be too big for them, like happened to us last season,’ Mourinho said. ‘Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and us are four very good teams.’

Mourinho claimed that the handshake he and Conte exchanged here reflected mutual respect, despite their running feud.

If they lose at Man City next week, Chelsea could fall as much as nine points off the top four

‘That is what me and Antonio want to show everyone. The handshake before and after the match is an example that with everything in football you have to move and respect each other.

‘Mourinho and Conte — they are not two ordinary people in football. We have a history, we have an image and I’m really happy with that.’

Conte said that Alvaro Morata’s 86th-minute strike should not have been given offside, and called for more video refereeing.

‘This type of situation can change the final result and for this reason I am very positive to introduce the VAR,’ he said.

Chelsea star Eden Hazard is the best dribbler in Europe's top five leagues ahead of Neymar and Lionel Messi... while Paul Pogba ranks 12th

by , in

Chelsea's Eden Hazard is the best dribbler in Europe's top five leagues, superior to Neymar and Lionel Messi, according to the latest research by the CIES Football Observatory.

The Belgian star came out on top when calculations were made using a formula that multiplied the average number of dribbles per game with the percentage of successful ones.

According to the data, Hazard averages 6.4 successful dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League fixture, with 75 per cent of his dribbles ending with a successful outcome such as a pass to a team-mate, a shot or a goal.

Hazard has scored 15 goals in all competitions for Chelsea this season and has created a further 11 goals for his team-mates.

The overall score placed Hazard just ahead of Paris Saint-Germain's Brazilian Neymar, who tries more dribbles during games on average but loses possession more often.

Neymar's percentage of successful dribbles this season is identical to that of his former Barcelona team-mate Messi at 62 per cent.

The player with the highest percentage of successful dribbles is Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele, but the stats show the Belgian is less likely to attempt them.

Lyon's Tanguy Ndombele featured high in the rankings following some impressive displays

Dembele received the same score in the CIES index as Lyon's Tanguy Ndombele, the 21-year-old midfielder currently on loan from Amiens.

Among the other Premier League players in the top 10 are Arthur Masuaku of West Ham, plus Sofiane Boufal and Mario Lemina of Southampton.

Manchester United's Paul Pogba ranks joint-12th in the table with Watford's Andre Carrillo. Pogba on average will attempt three dribbles per league match and is successful with 73 per cent of them.

What Arsenal fans are saying about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after Man City's Carabao Cup victory

by , in
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a brilliant chance to score in Arsenal's Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

But former Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker nipped in front of the Gabonese striker, and the goalscoring opportunity came to nothing.

From then on Arsenal offered very little going forward. In fact, in the second half, the Gunners had just two shots on goal, with neither hitting the target.

After the match Wenger bemoaned Aubameyang's missed opportunity, telling Sky Sports: "I felt we had the first good chance – a very easy one that we missed. After that we made a big mistake for their first goal.

Arsene Wenger reveals how he was trolled by fourth official as Arsenal were thumped by Manchester City
"We controlled them pretty well in the first half, but they came out in the second half, and we were unlucky because the second goal was offside. But congratulations to Man City, they deserve the win.

"When you lose a game, you have to cope with being criticised. Emotionally after a game – particularly a final – you do not want to go too much into criticism.

"We must recover quickly – we came to the final and we lost but we have to focus on the next Premier League game [against City on Thursday].

"When you lose 3-0 you have to look at defending better. When you lose concentration against quality teams you pay for it.

Arsenal fan Piers Morgan destroys 'pathetic' Gunners in rant and compares Arsene Wenger to 'Death Row inmate'
"It's not application that was missed – it was lapses of concentration and a bit unlucky as well."

Arsenal shelled out £56million to land Aubameyang in the January transfer window, on account of Alexandre Lacazette misfiring.

Fans had hoped the Gabonese hitman would solve all their attacking problems, but one thing became abundantly clear after the Carabao Cup defeat.

And it seems supporters are now less inclined to point the finger at the France international for his poor goalscoring form, because it's the supply that's at fault.

by , in

Former first lady of America, Michelle Obama on Sunday revealed that she would be releasing a memoir titled 'Becoming' in November 2018.

Nigerian Media personality, Toke Makinwa reacted positively to this on social media, as her very popular memoir 'On Becoming' has a similar name.

Toke Makinwa shared the teaser poster and wrote

Way to go MO!!!!! I wrote a book called “On Becoming...”, it’s the first of many as I am still on a journey to become! She’s written a book called “Becoming”. Everyone has a story to tell no matter who you are or where you are from. We are all traveling thru life and It is important to share your story. You never know who needs your strength to get thru their demons. Everything that’s happened to you, happened for you and the more you break the barriers of shame, accept the past and use it to shape who you become for the future; the more you rise. I cannot wait to read her own journey to becoming who she is now and I hope this further inspires anyone out there to live in their truth and shine thru each phase of their lives. #OnBecoming #Becoming #Powerofwords #tunnelvision #OnBecomingBold #Onbecomingmore
An Instragram user decided to caution Toke in the comment section of her post, writing that Michelle Obama's book has nothing to do with her.

Toke however wasn't having it. See her reply below.

'I don't care who they are, I would never stop to try to meet somebody where they are negatively' - Oprah Winfrey blasts Donald Trump and Mo'Nique (Video)

by , in

Oprah Winfrey has blasted President Donald Trump and Stand-up comedian Mo'Nique, over the negative comments they made about her.

The Media mogul, alongside Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling featured in a new interview on Global Grind, where they discussed their new film, 'A Wrinkle in Time.'

During their discussion, when Oprah was asked why she's yet to respond to the negative comments made about her, she said:

"It's impossible, it's a law that if you meet negative with negative you will just have a combustive negative force of energy," said Oprah. "You can't meet negative energy where it is, you have to rise above it, you have to transcend it. You have to be the light. It only takes a little bit of light to banish the darkness, it takes a lot of darkness to overcome the light. It takes just a little bit of light and we are warriors of the light. I would never stoop to try to meet somebody where they are negatively. Don't care who they are."
Stand-up comedian, Mo’Nique who has constantly accused Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, and Lee Daniels for tarnishing her career, and black balling her quickly responded to her remark on Twitter

She tweeted: “@Oprah there is a difference between negativity for the sake of being negative and there is a difference between the truth which may be negative. If you notice what your not saying is I’ve lied about anything and that is very telling don’t you think. #truthwillsetyoufree”
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump who recently referred to Oprah as insecure in a tweet is yet to react to her remark.

'Arsenal was 'pathetic, gutless, uninspired, creatively devoid and technically incompetent, Arsene Wenger must go - Piers Morgan writes open letter to the Gunners'

by , in

Controversial journalist and die-hard Arsenal fan, Piers Morgan has written an open letter to the club, after they were beaten 3-0 by Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

According to him, Arsenal has been deteriorating under Wenger for 10 years now, and he 'needs to go for God sake.'

Read his open letter below.

Arsenal were pathetic. No, hang on, that’s too generous. Pathetic means causing or evoking sympathy. I don’t feel any sympathy for the team who capitulated so appallingly to Manchester City. I feel blind fury and bitter resentment.

We were gutless, uninspired, creatively devoid and technically incompetent. We have no leader like Tony Adams or Patrick Vieira, we’ve become a soft touch and the players don’t know how to fight.

Wenger looked like a death row inmate waiting to be taken to the electric chair; angry, frustrated, careworn and suddenly very old. Arsenal are disintegrating as a major club before my eyes. It’s time Arsene Wenger and Arsenal parted company.

Strong words, right?

But here’s the thing: I didn’t write this last night after Arsenal were thrashed 3-0 in the Carabao Cup final — though it would have been perfectly appropriate. I wrote it nearly TEN YEARS AGO, in a MailOnline column on November 24, 2008, after a previous 3-0 beating by Manchester City.

And reading that column again now, it’s horribly clear that absolutely nothing has changed. In fact, Arsenal have deteriorated.

We’re sixth in the league table, 27 points off the lead and 10 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham. We’re out of the FA Cup, have just been humiliated in the League Cup final, and face probable elimination from the Europa League against AC Milan.

Last season was Wenger’s worst at the club. This season is shaping up to be even poorer. Yet he clings on, dragging the club he once so gloriously revolutionised into further dismal mediocrity with every day he refuses to quit.

As Arsenal legend Ian Wright put it so well on Sunday: ‘Watching Wenger now is like witnessing the ageing Muhammad Ali against Larry Holmes or Brazil’s Ronaldo when he got fat. The problem with Arsene is there is no one in his corner prepared to throw in the towel.’

Exactly.

Sunday was the latest of many recent humiliations for Wenger and Arsenal. It can’t go on. For his sake, the club’s sake and, most importantly, the fans’ sake.

Arsene, it’s over. For God’s sake man, GO.

MANCHESTER UNITED defender Eric Bailly handed a note from Jose Mourinho to Nemanja Matic when he was introduced in the win against Chelse

by , in
MANCHESTER UNITED defender Eric Bailly handed a note from Jose Mourinho to Nemanja Matic when he was introduced in the win against Chelsea.

The centre-back came on for Alexis Sanchez with 10 minutes to go and the Red Devils leading 2-1 in the Premier League showdown.

Willian had given Chelsea the lead, smashing past David De Gea, in the 32nd minute.

But just seven minutes later Romelu Lukaku equalised for Manchester United to the delight of the home crowd.

The game was tight in the second half until substitute Jesse Lingard earned all three points for Mourinho's side.

The England international headed home a Lukaku cross in the 75th minute.

Mourinho put Bailly on for Sanchez to shore up his defence and secure the three points for United.

The Ivory Coast international was handed a note by the Special One which he quickly read before folding up.

Bailly then sprinted onto the field and gave the piece of paper to Matic for him to take Mourinho's instructions on board.

The former Chelsea man looked bemused at first when Bailly handed over the note but quickly read his instructions.

And whatever Mourinho wrote did work as United held on for an important 2-1 victory.

Next up for the Red Devils is an away clash against Crystal Palace on Monday, March 5.

Carabao Cup Sky's the limit for Pep's Manchester City slickers

by , in

Pep Guardiola's League Cup triumph against Arsenal could usher in an era of dominance for Manchester City but he had three veterans to thank for a comprehensive win at Wembley.
City were not at their best in a scrappy first half on a bitingly cold February day on Sunday, failing to hit the exalted heights of their football earlier this season.

The highlight of the opening period was a bizarre opener for Sergio Aguero, who netted his 199th goal for the club direct from a punt down the field by City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo -– a rare route-one goal for a side renowned for their intricate football.

But it was men against boys after the break as City totally dominated a disappointing Arsenal side, cantering to a 3-0 win with further goals from an ecstatic Vincent Kompany and David Silva.

The League Cup may seem like small fry to a man with a glittering CV that includes two Champions League triumphs while in charge of Barcelona and a clutch of league titles with Bayern Munich.

But an emotional Guardiola knows that winning the first silverware is crucial to infusing his runaway Premier League leaders with the belief to go on and win bigger prizes.

"It's important," said the Catalan. "We're so happy, and big congratulations to all of Manchester City, and our fans. This trophy is for Manchester City and not for me.

"The first half was not good but in the second half we played really well," he said.

"We were in the second half like we have been so far (this season) so of course big congratulations for all Manchester City.

"That’s why it’s important to win titles because it’s going to help us win the next games in the Premier League."

Quadruple dreams
City saw their dreams of an unprecedented quadruple shattered just six days before the Wembley final when third-tier Wigan dumped them out of the FA Cup.

Manchester City's manager Pep Guardiola poses with his assistants, (L-R) Rodolpho Borrell, Mikel Arteta and Domenec Torrent, after their victory in the English League Cup final

(AFP)
But a 13-point lead in the Premier League means they are champions-elect and they have one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals after a 4-0 victory against Basel in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Guardiola said although winning his first trophy at the club means a lot to him personally, he is just a chapter in City's history.

He knows that for all he has reshaped the club in his image, it was three veterans of City’s defining 2012 Premier League title triumph who delivered the goods at Wembley.

Guardiola said Aguero, Silva and Kompany were three legends who had helped turn the club from perennial under-achievers into regular trophy winners, capable of going toe to toe with the heavyweights of Europe and challenging regularly for honours.

"They help us to understand what it means for the club because they won titles, they put pressure on us to continue to win titles," he said.

"If we are able to win more titles in the future the people who are coming here, they have to know here you have to win titles and that’s why it's so, so important."

A relaxed-looking Guardiola thanked the club's hierarchy for sticking with him during a barren first season at the helm of the club last year, when many questioned whether his "pure" brand of football would work in England.

He admitted he had imposed heavy demands on his players but said he never doubted himself.

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, one of the standout players in England this year, said the sky is the limit for the club.

"We have had a good season already, and now we need to keep going," he said. "We have this one in the bag and now we have to maintain the same focus in the Premier League and the Champions League.

"The potential for this club is amazing, and the way we play is probably one of the best in the world."
