Google celebrates late Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi who would have been 56 today

by , in

Late Super Eagles defender and coach, Stephen Keshi would have celebrated his 56th birthday if he were to be alive today, but nonetheless he has been honoured by tech Giant Google with a doodle.

Doodles are changes made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists.

The 'Big Boss' as he was fondly called in his lifetime died in June 2016, less than seven months after he lost his wife, Kate, to cancer.

He won the African Cup of Nations for Nigeria as a player in 1994 and was the only Nigerian to have won the same tournament as a coach, a feat he achieved in South Africa in 2013. In the same year, he qualified the Super Eagles for the 2014 World Cup held in Brazil, thereby becoming the first African coach to qualify two African countries for the World Cup finals.

Before guiding the Super Eagles to a successful AFCON, Keshi was in charge of Mali and Togo, with whom he enjoyed a measure of success. He was the first coach to qualify lowly Togo to for the 2006 World Cup. But he was sacked just before the tournament and was replaced by Otto Pfiser after the tiny West African country dismal showing at the 2006 African Cup of Nations in Egypt

Actress Calista Okoronkwo recounts how a man’s comment about actresses spoilt her day

by , in
Nollywood actress, Calista Okoronkwo took to her Instagram to narrate the comments a man made while she was having lunch with a friend, that spoilt her day.

According to her, the man referred to actresses as hustlers who sleep with rich men,
She wrote;
“Went out yesterday with my sister @adellenkuda to have a meal with a male friend. First time meeting …great food…conversation was going well and the evening was looking good as I love good conversations. In a blink of an eye, this guy spoils the entire mood and says “what do you have to say about the fact that people see actresses as hustlers?” He doesn’t stop there …he goes further to say he works with lots of top guns in Nigeria and he knows a couple of them who date actresses. In a split second, the food went from good to bad…evening went from great to ‘ungreat’ (I know there’s no word like that)…conversation turned sour. How do you say something like that to someone you are just meeting for the first time over a meal? I actually saw that question as immature because the generalization is just unforgivable . If that question was coming from someone I have known for a while, it won’t have been as offensive as it was. We do our best to put smiles on the faces of people by working tirelessly to make sure there’s something for your viewing pleasure and you put this annoying tag on us???? Trust my sister, she just stood right up and walked away. I did my best to maintain composure because I don’t want any blogger writing about me this new year. It took the Grace of God for me to be calm. Actresses are not all the terrible things you call them! Just like there are still good people around, there are still good actresses around. STOP THE GENERALIZATION ! WE ARE NOT STRAYS!!”

L'Oreal hijab model pulls out of campaign after backlash

by , in

The model who was supposed to be the first woman in a hijab to be part of a mainstream advert for hair care has said she's pulling out of the campaign following backlash.

UK beauty blogger Amena Khan says she's pulling out of a L'Oreal campaign "because of the current conversations surrounding it". She made the announcement via Instagram.

L

Khan's decision follows the discovery of tweets she wrote in 2014, which some have branded as "anti-Israel". Only days back, she revealed that she was delighted to be a part of the L'Oreal campaign.

She told Newsbeat: "It's a platform for diverse voices and women who don't fit the very narrow mould of beauty."

However, after she was accused of expressing "anti-Israel" views in a number of now-deleted tweets from 2014, she stepped down. Amena had hoped her role would inspire and empower other women who wear headscarves.

L

A spokesperson for L'Oreal Paris told Newsbeat: "We have recently been made aware of a series of tweets posted in 2014 by Amena Kahn, who was featured in a UK advertising campaign. We appreciate that Amena has since apologised for the content of these tweets and the offence they have caused. L'Oreal Paris is committed to tolerance and respect towards all people. We agree with her decision to step down from the campaign."
