Twitter pulls conspiracist's verified badge after celebrity outrage

by , in
It took Chrissy Teigen and John Legend to get action.

Twitter's stricter approach to verification isn't just taking checkmarks away from the leaders of racist groups. The social network has pulled the verified badge from conspiracy peddler Liz Conkin after Chrissy Teigen and her husband John Legend reacted to Conkin's unsupported claims that the two were trafficking their child in a Washington, DC pedophile ring. As Teigen explained, it didn't make sense that Twitter would verify someone who was accusing her of horrific acts, especially not when this person has nearly 50,000 followers.
Legend helped elaborate on the concerns. He noted to one of Conkin's supporters that the bogus Pizzagate scandal "almost got someone killed" -- the concern is that a Conkin devotee would believe the unsubstantiated claims at face value and threaten the couple. Legend vowed to sue Conkin if she kept making her claims.
The conspiracist deleted her posts and backtracked in a bid to avoid a lawsuit, claiming that Teigen and Legend "run in circle [sic]" with pedophiles and that they "could be victims themselves." However, that didn't help her case -- Teigen said she still had the evidence and vowed that Conkin would be "going to court."
We've asked Twitter for its comment. From a cursory glimpse, though, it looks like Conkin was a prime candidate for losing verification: her claims violated rules against "inciting or engaging in harassment." Many of her supporters lapped up the accusations without checking the facts, and both Teigen and Legend have been harassed as a result. Twitter has previously said that it doesn't want verification to serve as a tacit endorsement of vile behavior, and this appears to qualify.
With that said, the incident highlights a familiar pattern for Twitter: it tends to respond to an outcry when celebrities or the press draw attention to the issue. There are concerns that others might continue to abuse their verified status unless Twitter is more proactive.
YOU POSTED MY DAUGHTER AND HAVE 50,000 PEOPLE ACCUSING ME OF BEING IN A PEDO RING. I don't care HOW you backtrack or WHAT you deleted. I have it ALL. I'm the last person you are fucking with. You are DONE with me and my family. You are going to court.

LG shows off the world's first 88-inch 8K OLED display

by , in

It's the largest and highest-resolution OLED screen to date.
Just as 4K and HDR are finally going mainstream, the ambitious folks at LG Display have also been busy pushing its OLED technology to 8K. Come CES, the Korean manufacturer will be letting attendees get up close with its new 88-inch 8K OLED display (can we just call it the "Triple 8?"), which is both the largest and the highest-resolution OLED panel to date. But as far as specs go, that's all we have for now.
Previously, the largest OLED screen size was 77 inches, and it "only" came in 4K. While this combination is currently offered to consumers by the likes of LG Electronics, Sony and Panasonic, they all source their large OLED panels from LG Display.
With its main rival Samsung Display having long shifted its focus from OLED TVs to QLED TVs, LG Display is now the sole large-size OLED display maker in the world. That said, with potential competition from other countries like Japan, LG Display has made huge investments to ensure that it continues to have the upper hand by ramping up OLED production capacity, as well as to make a bigger push into mobile OLED panels -- a market dominated by its Samsung counterpart. Part of this includes the construction of a new OLED plant outside of Korea for the first time -- in China's Guangzhou city, no less, and this was recently approved by the South Korean government.

Plane crash in Costa Rica kills 10 U.S. citizens, 2 crew members

by , in

A plane carrying 10 U.S. citizens and two local crewmembers crashed in a wooded area, killing all aboard Sunday yesterday, Costa Rica’s government said.
The Public Safety Ministry posted photographs and video of the crash site showing burning wreckage of the plane in Guanacaste, northwest Costa Rica.
Authorities said Sunday evening that so far they had only a list of passengers provided by the airline and were awaiting official confirmation of their identities.
A family in the suburbs of New York City said five of the dead Americans were relatives on vacation. They identified them as Bruce and Irene Steinberg and their sons Matthew, William and Zachary, all of Scarsdale.
“We are in utter shock and disbelief right now,” Bruce Steinberg’s sister, Tamara Steinberg Jacobson, wrote on Facebook. She also confirmed the deaths in an interview with NBC News.
Rabbi Jonathan Blake, of the Westchester Reform Temple in Scarsdale, said the Steinbergs were involved in philanthropy and local Jewish groups. “They will be deeply missed,” he told the New York Post.
At a news conference, Enio Cubillo, director of Costa Rica Civil Aviation, said the Nature Air charter flight took off just after noon Sunday from Punta Islita and was headed for the capital of San Jose when it crashed
Cubillo said the cause was under investigation.
He identified the pilot as Juan Manuel Retana and described him as very experienced. Former Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla, who served from 2010 to 2014, said via Twitter that Retana was her cousin.
Nature Air did not respond to phone and email messages.

Britney Spears Ends Her Vegas Residency with Live New Year's Eve Performance

by , in

An era in Britney Spears‘ legacy ended with a lively New Year’s Eve performance on Sunday night.
The pop star rang in the new year with her final Las Vegas residency show on New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest to the delight of fans.
First, Spears — clad in a sparkly leotard —treated viewers to a rendition of her high-energy hit “Work Bitch.” She told those in the Vegas audience and those tuning in across the country, “Happy New Year’s! I love you guys!”
The singer and dancer performed live from the AXIS at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, which has been the home of her much-lauded residency Britney: Piece of Me since December 2013.
Later — just after midnight — the 36-year-old entertained viewers again, this time with her iconic tune “Toxic.” The second song was also accompanied by a costume change, with Spears slipping into a fiery red leotard.

Ahead of the live broadcast, Spears tweeted her excitement and gratitude for those who supported her residency. She wrote, “I just want to say thank you to the #PieceOfMe cast and crew, the city of Las Vegas, and all of the fans who came out to sing, dance and party!! What an incredible four years!! Love you all!!”

Spears announced the news about her Rockin’ Eve appearance on Instagram earlier this month, writing, “Going to be ending 2017 with the last #PieceOfMe show ever and a special performance on @rockineve!! Tune in to ABC on 12/31 starting at 8/7c to watch!! #BRITNEYxRockinEve.”

In April, Spears revealed her residency would be coming to a close after four years on the Strip.
“As I prepare to say goodbye to Piece of Me, I had no idea how magical this experience would be,” she said in a press release at the time. “Having my fans from around the world come see my show has been amazing. I love Las Vegas and will miss performing this show.”
