Zinedine Zidane has revealed that he spoke to Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos before announcing that he would step down as manager of the Champions League holders.
The Frenchman has been in charge for two-and-a-half seasons since replacing Carlo Ancelotti, winning the Champions League in three consecutive campaigns as well as winning a La Liga crown too.
However, Zidane feels his time at the Bernabeu has come to an end, and he becomes the first manager to resign from Real rather than be sacked under president Florentino Perez’s reign.
The news shocked the football world, and it also took Real by surprise, though Zidane did call Ramos to explain his decision before going public.
‘I’ve sent a message to all the squad and I’ve spoken to Sergio Ramos,’ the French coach explained.
As a player and coach you decided to say goodbye at the top. Thank you for two and a half incredible years. Your legacy will never be erased, one of the most successful chapters in the history of our beloved @realmadrid pic.twitter.com/dO6bw74aA3— Sergio Ramos (@SergioRamos) May 31, 2018
‘As always as a person and captain, we have lived a lot together, he respects my decision. ‘He wished me luck.
He is a leader, a captain and it has been a pleasure to share three more years with him.’
He continued: ‘I’m not going to coach another team right now. I’m not looking for another team.’
