People think Barack Obama's Memorial Day tribute is much better than Donald Trump's

Donald Trump has been blasted for his ‘inappropriate, ignorant and tone-deaf’ Memorial Day tribute tweet. The president took the opportunity to commemorate America’s fallen heroes while also praising his own successes on Monday, writing: ‘Happy Memorial Day!

‘Those who died for our great country would be very happy and proud at how well our country is doing today. ‘Best economy in decades, lowest unemployment numbers for Blacks and Hispanics EVER (& women in 18years), rebuilding our Military and so much more. Nice!’ But it was soon roundly condemned, with Obama-era State Department spokesman John Kirby calling it ‘one of the most inappropriate, ignorant and tone-deaf things our Commander-in-Chief could have said on a day like today.’

Former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Martin Dempsey wrote: ‘This day, of all days of the year, should not be about any one of us.’ Trump’s message was also compared unfavorably to his predecessor Barack Obama’s statesmanlike tweet, which read: ‘We can never truly repay the debt we owe our fallen heroes.

‘But we can remember them, honor their sacrifice, and affirm in our own lives those enduring ideals of justice, equality, and opportunity for which generations of Americans have given that last full measure of devotion.’

YouTube star Tyler Oakley was among those who noticed the difference in tone, posting a screenshot of the two tweets with the caption ‘we downgraded beyond belief.’ Another tweeter called nycsouthpaw also shared the two messages, and wrote *looks out of the window for a long time*, apparently implying that he was wistful for the years that Obama was president.

Yet another tweeter joked that the difference in tone showed that America had ‘downgraded from an iPhone X to a telegram.’ The annual public holiday remembers those who died while serving in America’s armed forces. Trump has attacked army vets including Senator John McCain over their military records, even though he received five deferments from the Vietman war draft and never served in the military.
